The route runs through Monmouthshire from the lovely market town of Abergavenny, known as the Gateway to Wales, and the city of Newport.

The route follows theMonmouthshire and Brecon canal towpathalong the River Usk from the boundary with the City of Newport to Pontymoile Canal Basin. Passing through a fairly built-up area, the canal provides a green corridor with an excellent, wide gravel towpath and views of hills rising to over 1000 ft at its western end.

The route then continues northwards from Pontymoile along the canal towpath to the boundary with the County Borough of Monmouthshire at Mamhilad.听Route 492 branches from听Route听49 at Forge Hammer, Cwmbran and runs northwards to Pontypool.
